From a Hilltop Homestead to Oklahoma’s Prairie Sanctuary
What began as five neglected acres of Johnson Grass on an abandoned hilltop homestead in western Canadian County has grown into one of Oklahoma’s most inspiring conservation stories. In the late 1990s, Daniel, a retired contractor, an espresso café owner, and a Canadian County Master Gardener, and his wife, Ruthie, set down roots on the land and began a transformation that’s still unfolding today.
Acre by acre, season by season, they converted open prairie into a living tapestry of:
- Native wildflower beds and pollinator gardens
- Woodland garden paths through western Soapberry groves
- Restored prairie grasslands rich with native grasses and perennials
- Cross-timber canyon trails across 45 acres of recently expanded grounds
Recently expanding to 45 acres of prairie and canyon woodland, Pugh Prairie Gardens is now developing into a full Home Grown Nature Park, a place where Oklahoma’s natural heritage is not just preserved, but celebrated.
Our Mission
Pugh Prairie Gardens exists to restore, protect, and share the beauty of Oklahoma’s native landscapes. As a 501(c3) non-profit, we are committed to:
- Prairie restoration and native pollinator habitat protection
- Cross-timber woodland preservation and native tree planting
- Environmental education for visitors of all ages
- Building community around Oklahoma’s natural heritage
We believe that when people connect with nature, they become its most passionate defenders.
What Makes Us Unique
We’re not a manicured botanical garden; we’re the real Oklahoma. Our trails wind through authentic native plantings, restored prairie grasslands, and Soapberry woodland groves that hum with pollinators and wildlife. Our recognitions and achievements include:
- Certified Wildlife Habitat and Monarch Waystation
- Yard by Yard conservation member
- Recipients of a 2025 Okies for Monarchs grant funding 700 sq. ft. of new native pollinator gardens
- Featured on OETA’s Oklahoma Gardening and KFOR 4’s Is This a Great State or What
- Participants in the Centennial Keep Route 66 Beautiful initiative
